The study by Carnegie Weight Management found 60 per cent view surgery and gastric bands as "cheating", with 71 per cent feeling it is too dangerous and just under two-thirds (61 per cent) believing there are easier ways to lose weight.
A total of 74 per cent revealed they had tried dieting to no avail while 24 per cent blamed a lack of weight management services in their area as a reason for their previous unsuccessful weight loss.
In total more than 100 children with weight problems were questioned.
