Council spends on weight-loss camp

Health
Rotherham Primary Care Trust (PCT) is to spend 1.5m on a weight-loss scheme for 2,000 children and their families.

The three-year initiative will include 12-week courses at non-residential weight-loss clubs, as well as a six-week residential in Leeds, both run by Carnegie Weight Management.

The first residential programme, which will take place this summer, will be attended by 38 children, with similar numbers expected to attend in the subsequent two years.

All children who wanted to attend the residential programme this year have received funding.

Children attending the residential camp have been recommended by local GPs or responded to advertisements in schools and the media.

The programme includes advice on exercise activities available locally.

Carol Weir, public health specialist at Rotherham PCT, said: "With one in three children in Rotherham overweight and obese, this is a serious issue that warrants serious investment."
