At least a third of children are overweight or obese, according to the British Heart Foundation.

- If the present trend continues, 55 per cent of boys and 70 per cent of girls will be overweight or obese by 2050. As a result, obesity will cost the country £45bn per year

- Diet and health are intrinsically connected. Heart disease, various types of cancer, tooth decay, poor mental health and a wide range of other illnesses have been linked to a poor diet

- Childhood obesity is linked to type 2 diabetes and diseases of the heart and circulation. Being overweight also increases the risk of high blood pressure and of high cholesterol

- One in eight children (12.5 per cent) has played a game on a food company's website
