Lib Dem Conference 2010: Tackle national debt through tax not cuts, urges CPAG

The government should do more to decrease the national debt through tax rises, as opposed to spending cuts, the Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) has warned.

Speaking at a Liberal Democrat party conference fringe event, Imran Hussein, policy director at CPAG, argued that the coalition government is putting too much emphasis on cutting public spending quickly.

"We need to make sure that we sort out the deficit so that the children of tomorrow aren’t lumbered with the consequences," he said. "But we’ve also got to be thinking about the children around today and being fair to them as well."

Hussein added that welfare reforms must be accompanied by additional support for families.

"We’re looking for measures to make work pay," he explained. "But we’re also looking for action to do with barriers like childcare."
