Lib Dem conference: Poverty campaign must target poorest

The government must aim to raise the very poorest families out of poverty if a pledge to raise the standard of life for children is to be successful, a Liberal Democrat peer has warned.

Speaking at a fringe event at the Liberal Democrat party conference, Baroness Joan Walmsley said she fears it would be easy to make the policy appear successful by improving the lot of those families just below the poverty line.

"I am delighted government has committed itself to certain targets but there are always problems with targets," she said.

"We have a very large proportion of children who live below the poverty line but I don't want to see the focus on those just below the line to make the figures look good.

"I shall be asking government to set targets that give credit for those areas where the very poorest are."
