In a question and answer session at the party's annual conference this weekend, Clegg told delegates that young people are one of the Liberal Democrat's three top priorities, as well as creating new jobs and reinventing politics.
He said: "The worst most poisonous legacy of the recession is that one in five young people between the ages of 18 and 24 are unemployed. That is hopeless, that is living in a condition in hopelessness."
Clegg claimed his party would put more money into providing short term internships for the young unemployed. He also promised to stick to the Liberal Democrat pledge to offer disadvantaged children a pupil premium, to help them get on at school.
