Inspectors commend work of Reading and Surrey offending teams

Youth offending teams (YOTs) in Reading and Surrey have been praised for their work following recent inspections.

An inspection by HM Inspectorate of Probation found that in Reading, strengths of the YOT included timely sentence plans in custodial cases with the majority of factors associated with the offence or safeguarding being addressed in the plans.

Meanwhile, in all custodial cases monitored, service workers and the majority of other agencies were actively and meaningfully involved throughout the custodial planning process. In terms of safeguarding strengths, secure establishments were also made aware of vulnerability issues prior to or immediately on sentence in all six relevant cases.

Safeguarding work was found to be done well 78 per cent of the time, work to reduce the risk of harm to others 65 per cent of the time and work to reduce the likelihood of reoffending 74 per cent of the time, with the findings described as "encouraging".
