The study, featured in the journal Thorax, analysed how often tobacco use was depicted in the 15 most commercially successful films screened in the UK between 1989 and 2008.
Among the 15 most popular films, tobacco products featured in seven out of 10 films, over half of which (56 per cent) were classified as suitable for those under 15 and 92 per cent for those under 18.
The authors found that appearances of branded tobacco products were nearly twice as likely to occur in British films.
Twelve different brands appeared in Bridget Jones's Diary (certificate 15) – the highest for any film, they wrote.
