Heads roll in Haringey after "devastating" report

Hampshire director of children's services John Coughlan will replace suspended Haringey DCS Sharon Shoesmith after a "devastating" report on the council's safeguarding was delivered to the Government.

Children's secretary Ed Balls said the report, commissioned last month to investigate the death of the child known as Baby P, was "a damning verdict on the current management of safeguarding in Haringey." He called the findings "devastating" and said inspectors had uncovered "a catalogue of failings" which needed "urgent and sustained attention".

These included: a failure to talk directly to children at risk; agencies working in isolation; a failure to identify children and young people at risk of harm and insufficient management by the director of children's services.

Balls also said the serious case review which the council conducted into Baby P's death was inadequate. "Haringey council will now remove the current director of children's services from her post with immediate effect," he said.
