Peter Lewis, deputy chief executive of Enfield council, is to take over as director of children's services at Haringey, replacing sacked former director Sharon Shoesmith.

Lewis was director of education, children's services and leisure at Enfield for five years and has been deputy chief executive for a year. He will take up his new position from 1 January next year.

Children's Secretary Ed Balls, who chose Lewis for the role, said: "Peter Lewis has great experience and an excellent reputation. I am confident that he will provide the strong leadership which is needed to improve outcomes for children and young people in Haringey. I will ask Peter to report to me every month on progress which is being made."

Lewis said: "I am pleased to be able to join Haringey and through my appointment, help provide some stability and renewed confidence for the staff that are working hard every day to do the right thing for children and young people. I do not underestimate the challenges associated with taking on this role but I believe we can build a strong team at Haringey and deliver better lives for local children and young people."
