Government guidance due on early learning for boys

1 min read Early Years
The government is set to issue advice on how boys can be better supported through early learning, with particular emphasis on improving achievements in writing.

Children's minister Dawn Primarolo revealed the plans to CYP Now after the latest government figures showed that girls are improving more than boys under the new Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Despite boys improving in 11 of the 13 early learning goals in the past year, girls continue to achieve at a higher level. And the gender gap has now widened in three of the seven learning areas: dispositions and attitudes, writing and shape, and space and measures.

"Boys have improved since last year and that is a very good indication, but particularly in the area of writing we have to continue to do more," Primarolo told CYP Now. "The Department for Children, Schools and Families is working on improving advice and support on working with boys shortly. We really need to redouble our efforts here."
