Q How can I help my social work team keep to time and cancel fewer appointments?
Poor timekeeping and cancelled appointments undermines relationships and can lead to families disengaging. It sends the message that children and parents are not sufficiently valued.
There can be good reasons for cancelling, but this must be kept to a minimum. If it is happening a lot this suggests tasks need to be organised differently so there is less competition between urgent and planned work.
First, find out how much of a problem it is in your service. Ask staff to record, over a couple of weeks, every time they cancel or were more than 10 or 15 minutes late for an appointment. With this information you can then move on to discuss the impact and look at what is preventing practitioners from being more reliable.
