Q I’m a social worker in a looked-after children team. How can I ensure the children I’m responsible for achieve their potential in education?

As the social worker for a looked-after child you have responsibility for the overall direction and progress of the child’s care plan. Ensuring a child’s educational needs are met and they are doing as well as they can in education is an important part of that.

You need to know the child’s educational history, including how this may have affected their progress, whether the child has any learning difficulties or disabilities, their levels of attainment, what they are interested in and their aspirations for the future.
