Q I’m working with a group of teenagers who have started camping out in open spaces at the weekend. There has been concern about levels of drinking and sexual activity. I don’t want to ruin their fun but how can I tackle this sensitively?
Do you know all of the young people involved? Can you do some outreach work in the evenings to see who is there and what is going on? Can you offer any alternative activities or structured camping trips that are safe and supervised?
In one city, homelessness outreach workers identified a growing trend of homeless young people sleeping in tents in parks. Meanwhile an audit of child sexual exploitation hotspots found a rise in the number of children and young people taken to “parties” at caravan parks and campsites.
