Q I am a school support assistant in a village with a small Traveller site. During the winter, Traveller children attend school regularly but in the summer their families move around. How can my school help support the ongoing learning of the children while they are on the road?
There are many innovative schemes for ensuring children of Traveller families gain access to a range of services while mobile, including health and education.
Speak to your local Traveller education service. They can liaise with a child’s regular school to explore alternative learning options while travelling, and also link up with schools in areas where families are planning to stop to look at what support is on offer there. Some schools offer virtual classroom provision via laptops allowing school work to be sent to children, completed and returned for marking. Webchat programmes like Facetime and Skype mean conversations and teaching can also take place.
