Extended schools: Schools can plunder delegated budget

1 min read
The Government has told schools they can raid their core budgets to pay for extended services.

New guidance from the Department for Education and Skills paves the wayfor huge amounts of extra cash to be channelled into the initiative, above the 840m already committed by the department.

The guidance gives head teachers the green light to delve into thegeneral 'delegated budget' which is usually directed at the nationalcurriculum.

It states: "A school's delegated budget is the funding that schoolsreceive from the local authority for the 'purposes of the school'. TheGovernment's view is that the term 'purposes of the school' could beconstrued as embracing all activities that bring an educational benefitto pupils at the school, or to pupils registered at other schools. Thiscould include activities within childcare."
