Opinion: Debate - Should all schools be expected to meet the coreoffer?

Last year, the Government set out a core offer of extended services for all schools to work towards. But last week children's minister Beverley Hughes said extended schools do not have to provide "every single thing" in the offer.

All schools should be required to meet the core offer. The Governmenthas stated that these services are key to the Every Child Mattersagenda.

If the Government is serious about ensuring that all children and youngpeople achieve their full potential then it is extremely important thatschools should not pick and choose which services they offer. This willresult in variations between schools and it is likely that the mostdisadvantaged children will miss out.

Martin Ward, deputy general secretary, Association of School and CollegeLeaders Schools should be able to make local decisions about whatthere's a demand for. There's clearly no point in putting on provisionthat nobody wants or is already available next door. A degree offlexibility will certainly help to get these projects off the ground. Itwill also enable schools to start with aspects of provision and get themrunning and add on other aspects later.
