1 min read
Greensward College has announced that cutting the length of its summer holiday and switching to a five-term year has boosted pupils' exam results, but others feel children deserve their six-week summer holidays.

YES - David Triggs, head teacher, Greensward College, Essex

Every school should look at doing it. It's important to give every childa chance to grow and achieve. In the late 1990s there was a lot ofresearch in the US about year-round education. This work found the longsummer break was a drain on the education of children who are moreacademically challenged. If we want every child to matter we have torecognise this. It might make no difference to private schools orgrammar schools but those kinds of school are highly selective.NO - Steve Maltby, secondary school teacher, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex

The long summer holiday is greatly appreciated by both teachers andpupils alike. Over a long school year it takes a week for teachers towind down. Preparation is considerable for the start of the year inSeptember and the shorter the summer holidays the less time they willhave. There are also big problems with siblings at other schools. Thejunior feeder schools for Greensward are on different terms and thatmakes it a problem for parents.
