Opinion: Debate - Should community service be compulsory?

1 min read
A Government commission looking at integration and cohesion has recommended that every young person in the UK take part in a compulsory community service scheme, while others feel it should remain voluntary.

YES - Darra Singh, chair, the Commission on Integration and Cohesion

The Commission on Integration and Cohesion, which is tasked byGovernment to look at the barriers to integration and cohesion, wouldlike to see a national programme of volunteering for young people, linked directly with local citizenship. It would give young people achance to contribute to their local areas. Cohesion and integrationwould be at the heart of these programmes and focus on bringing peoplefrom different backgrounds together.

NO - Mark Restall, head of information, Volunteering England

We feel volunteering is something that is both unpaid and freely enteredinto. That is the definition that we and the Government use forvolunteering. It's important that volunteering keeps thatdistinctiveness. We want to encourage young people to volunteer. Wedon't see any kind of compulsion as part of the volunteering world. Acharity called V is aimed at getting young people volunteering. Anyonewho wants to volunteer should contact their local volunteeringcentre.
