The Government's Commission on Integration and Cohesion this week said every young person in the UK should take part in a compulsory community service scheme.

Darra Singh, chair of the commission, said the move would promotecommunity cohesion: "The benefits of volunteering are great - bringingtogether young people from different backgrounds to work togethertowards a common goal.

"We need to consider a national community service and we should not beafraid of asking whether this should be compulsory."

Prime Minister Tony Blair set up the commission following the 7 Julybombings in 2005.
