MP calls for paid citizen scheme

Youth Work
Young people should be paid to take part in a national citizenship programme, Labour MP Frank Field has said.

Speaking at a debate on a national civic service, Field argued for ascheme in which young people would be paid a small amount to takepart.

Supporting a motion put forward by Prospect magazine, Field admitted thescheme would be expensive. But he said: "We need something for youngpeople who have been abandoned to give them some chance of integratingback into society. It should be a common experience for young peoplefrom different backgrounds."

In April, the Prime Minister said he wanted all young people to do 50hours of compulsory community service by the age of 19.

The Conservatives have proposed a national citizen service for all16-year-olds lasting for six weeks over the summer.
