In 2020/21, the LGO received 11,830 complaints and enquiries from members of the public overall despite being closed to new complaints during the first Covid-19 lockdown in March last year.

Of these new complaints 19 per cent - 2,328 complaints - related to education and children’s services, the new data shows.

Some 800 of these complaints led to detailed investigations carried out by the ombudsman, of which 77 per cent were upheld.

The highest number of complaints (79) related to Kent County Council.

Overall, the LGO has issued 1,488 recommendations for improvement to local authorities - an increase on previous years.
