The authority asked research charity Rainer CTC, an arm of youth charity Rainer, to conduct a survey of the 23,000 secondary school age children in the city.
The young people were asked questions to ascertain what problems they faced in their local communities. This was then compared to national data, and the findings are being used to create tailored interventions.
Councillor Marilyne MacLaren, convenor for education, children and families in Edinburgh, said: "This is an extensive survey of young people's views and concerns, indeed one of the largest ever in Scotland.
"I am committed to following up the results with actions to enhance their lives and make the city a fun and safe place for young people to live."
