DCSF diploma ads were misleading, says advertising watchdog

Education
The UK's advertising watchdog has criticised the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) for running a promotional campaign that wrongly stated diplomas are accepted by all universities.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld two complaints that the newspaper and radio campaign was misleading as Cambridge University did not accept some of the diplomas.

The only diploma the university accepts is the diploma in engineering, as long as it is taken alongside A-level physics.

In finding the adverts in breach of advertising codes the ASA has said the adverts cannot be run again in their current form.

A DCSF spokeswoman said: "We disagree with the decision taken by the ASA. We worked closely with the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service to ensure they were content with the accuracy of the advertising messages."
