Sheffield City Council's children’s services was graded “good but requires improvement in help and protection” in 2019, and has been rated "good" overall with inspectors hailing services as “outstanding for the experience and progress of children in care" following an inspection in September.

The most recent inspection looked at social work practice and the experience of children in care and protection, as well as the outcomes of care leavers.

Ofsted put the improvement down to a “child-focused, stable, consistent and skilled workforce, who share senior leaders’ commitment to supporting children” as well as investment and implementation of services.

Permanence plans for children were also commended as well as the work of social workers. Engagement among children was also rated highly as they were seen to have felt listened to and shaped the local authority’s provision.
