Medway Council was issued with an improvement notice in 2019 after an Ofsted inspection deemed its children’s services to be “inadequate” and has had this status revoked four years later.
Following the 2019 inspection, Ofsted said “most areas had deteriorated” since 2015 and “many vulnerable children were at risk of harm for too long". It also concluded that “dedicated staff and frontline managers across teams were not being supported to practice safely".
Eleanor Brazil was appointed by the Department of Education to act as the Medway children’s services commissioner following the inspection.
According to the latest report, there is now a “strong, determined and cohesive leadership team,” which is one of the main aspects of improvement. This is alongside the quality and impact of the corporate parenting board which now highlights children’s voices in a better capacity.
