Centre aims to encourage interest in science

Forty thousand children and teenagers a year are set to benefit from a new science centre that opened yesterday.

East London-based Centre of the Cell, which is free to visit,  is a giant orange pod from which visitors can look down on scientists working in a subterranean laboratory. There are also interactive games and displays.

The centre is located at the Whitechapel campus of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, part of Queen Mary, University of London.

More than 8,000 young people from schools in the London borough's of Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham were involved in the design and content of the centre.

Professor Fran Balkwill, director of Centre of the Cell, said: "The aim of the centre is to inspire young people to take an interest in science, to improve their knowledge of science and perhaps to lead them to becoming scientists themselves one day."
