Regional development agency Yorkshire Forward is dividing the funding across projects that offer ways of promoting the largely unpopular subjects. The Space Connections projects are using some of the money to fund rocket-making competitions and other challenges intended to increase students' interest. The projects will also focus on increasing parent and teacher participation.
Another project, the Raising Aspirations, Attitudes and Achievements programme, is running "meet the scientist" days for parents and children and the Continued Professional Development project will give teachers the option to brush up on the science, technology, engineering and maths curriculum.
The fund is the latest part of a five-year strategy to halt the decline of interest in the subjects. Ruth Adams, head of skills at Yorkshire Forward, said the agency is committed to improving results in science and maths subjects and that the projects will "undoubtedly" improve career prospects for students.
