Youth Opportunity Fund: How we spent it in ... Bristol

Young members of the city's funding panel have tried to ensure that money reaches those most in need, writes Tim Burke.

Branded locally as Youth Opportunities - or just YO - Bristol went with a simple strapline: "Want money for your ideas? Here's the opportunity".

Professional guidance for the panel was provided through Bristol Youth and Play Service's Participation Project. The overall allocation for the city in 2007/08 was £259,783 for the youth opportunity fund, £224,691 for the youth capital fund and an additional £20,142 was then made available for support and development.

Who is on the panel? Bristol's Youth Select Committee, which is made up of UK Youth Parliament members and candidates, was charged with developing an inclusive application and assessment process that put young people in control.
