Youth opportunity fund: How we spent it in... Birmingham

3 mins read Youth Work
Young people from all backgrounds have had a say in where the council's 2.92m allocation should be spent, writes Tim Burke.

As the largest local authority in the UK, Birmingham has had the biggest amount of money to distribute through its youth opportunity and youth capital fund panels. For 2006 to 2008, this amounted to £2.92m.

The consultation on how this should be distributed was led by Birmingham Youth Service's young people's management board Youth4Change.

The young people wanted to see local forums established in the 10 parliamentary constituencies and for existing networks, including the Rights of Children Group, which represents looked-after young people, and Increase the Peace Youth Forum, which aims to tackle antisocial behaviour, involved in the process.

Who is on the panel? "The focus has been to bring together young people of different abilities and backgrounds who are representative of their local area or remit," says panel co-ordinator Soulla Yiasouma.
