For many reasons some young women miss out on their educational needs and need a way to reconnect. Organisation such as GFS Platform provide a way for them to build confidence and engage in courses that will enhance their career prospects or life skills in an informal setting.
The main challenges concern getting over the barriers that young women have with regards to education and being able to fund all the courses we would like to. However, these are balanced by a sense of achievement from seeing young women grow and become more confident and positive about their futures.
One of the programmes we run for young women is Healthy Eating for Life, which won one of the Food Standards Agency's Dame Sheila McKechnie Awards last year. We work with young women between the ages of 14 and 25 who are either pregnant or have young children and often come from difficult backgrounds. The project aims to increase access to practical help as well as raise awareness on key food-related areas such as healthy eating, food content and labelling.
