Cowes High School, which is taking part in the Government's BuildingSchools for the Future programme, will use the money to build a learningcentre offering extended services to the community and specialising inbusiness enterprise.
The building will include facilities for adults to gain qualificationsand local businesses to train staff. Young people will be able to studyalongside other members of their family.
Steve Beynon, director of children's services at Isle of Wight Council,hoped businesses would work closely with the school and forge linksbetween work and education. "We lose some of our brighter young peoplebecause they are not aware of job opportunities on the island," hesaid.
