
In March, Islington replaced its existing youth opportunity fund panel with Funderstorm, a new type of youth initiative that gives a greater number of young people in the borough a say on how money is spent.
How did it come about? Since 2006, Islington used a straightforward single panel structure to consider bids for youth opportunity fund money.
The panel was seen as a success, says senior participation officer Rita Burrows, but there was a desire locally to develop something that involved more young people.
"We had some 5,000 young people directly benefiting through the youth opportunity fund but we wanted to involve more - we wanted to make it bigger and we wanted to make it more transparent," she says. The answer was to create a website where young people can vote for the projects they believe should receive funding.
