Luton's youth opportunity fund and youth capital fund are distributed through a Youthbank known as Young Fundz. In 2010-2011, young people had £103,728 in youth opportunity fund and £61,985 in youth capital fund money to distribute.
When was Young Fundz created? The fund was set up a few months before the government created the youth opportunity fund in 2006. By the time the Youthbank panel was recruited and trained, and the procedures and priorities established, the money from the youth opportunity fund had started to arrive.
Participation worker Lynnis Abbey says the organisers reached out to as many young people as they could to form a panel: "We sent out letters and leaflets to schools, youth clubs, doctors surgeries, pretty much anywhere young people went. We let them know that here was an opportunity to change things. We had a panel of 20 young people from all different backgrounds — black, white, Asian, a wheelchair user, those with hidden disabilities — you name it, we had it."
