
Buckinghamshire was already giving young people money to spend via an existing Youthbank before the youth opportunity and youth capital funds were established in 2006. The council decided to continue with the arrangement as it seemed to be the natural home for the new funding streams. For 2010/11, the council was due to receive £232,300 in youth opportunity fund money and £200,800 in youth capital fund money.
How has it worked out? Over time it became clear that there was scope for an expansion of the youth panel to enable more local decision-making. Before long, five local Youthbanks - also known as youth cabinets - were established to match the county's five administrative districts of Aylesbury Vale Rural, Aylesbury Vale Town, Chiltern, High Wycombe, and South Buckinghamshire. A county-wide Youthbank looks at applications covering all of Buckinghamshire.
