Dudley has adopted a new youth opportunity fund structure this year by creating five local area panels in addition to a borough-wide youth panel. The panels collectively distribute an annual total of £189,500 in youth opportunity fund and £163,800 in youth capital fund money.
What's the structure? In the early days, Dudley had a single borough-wide panel of around a dozen members. Young people wanting to apply for funds had to fill a form and, in the summer, young panel members would also go out on roadshows to meet young people and promote the funds.
Siobhan Lloyd, youth participation officer at Dudley Youth Service, says feedback showed panel members wanted to develop a better understanding of the projects applying for funds and therefore more face-to-face contact with applicants was needed.
