Multi-agency Panel: A suspected case of domestic abuse

4 mins read Social Care

THE SITUATION

Twenty-six-year-old Emma is six-and-a-half months pregnant. She arrives at her local accident and emergency department with bruising to her chest, thighs and abdomen, saying she fell down the stairs at her home. Before her current pregnancy, Emma suffered a miscarriage. She has a two-year-old son from a previous relationship.

On examination, nurses discover a number of scars on Emma's body from what appear to be recent injuries. Records show that Emma has had two previous visits to hospital in the past year with injuries to her arms and body, including bruising and cuts. On both visits her husband has been with her and has been caring towards Emma's son and concerned about Emma's condition.
