Multi-agency Panel: Running away from care to be with mum

4 mins read Social Care Residential and specialist care

THE SITUATION

Janine is 15 and currently lives in a residential unit for young people in care. She was 13 when she was taken into care because her mother, who has long-term mental health problems, became seriously ill and was sectioned. Janine has previously lived with foster carers and in another children's home but these placements didn't work out. One of the main problems is that Janine keeps running away. She has gone missing for days at a time and slept rough. She says she's not unhappy where she's living now but she simply doesn't want to be there. Instead, she wants to return home and live with her mum, who recently came out of hospital and is being supported by a community mental health team.
