ACTION

Families experiencing difficulties with their children are receiving support to improve their relationships as part of a programme developed by charity Family Links.

The charity's Nurturing Programme aims to help them explore and work on their self-awareness, empathy and self-regulation, and build on their existing capabilities to establish positive, sustainable outcomes for families.

It has been developed from the work of American child psychologist Stephen J. Bavolek, who identified four destructive parental behaviour patterns and proposed four “constructs” to counter them: self-awareness, appropriate expectations, empathy and positive discipline.

The charity trains a range of professionals working with children and families to deliver the programme, from local authority edge of care teams, family hubs, and social work teams, through to health visitors, staff in schools, voluntary settings and even prisons.
