The programme is funded by paid-for training at £395 per person. Training is generally commissioned by local authorities or similar bodies

BACKGROUND

The origins of the Peep Learning Together Programme go back 25 years when concerns about the literacy levels of many pupils at a secondary school in a deprived area of Oxford sparked action. “Some pupils were basically excluded from the whole curriculum because they didn’t have the literacy levels needed to access it,” says Sally Smith, chief executive of Peeple, the charity that runs Peep Learning Together. “The headmaster and one of the school governors came up with the idea of a project that would not work remedially with the school pupils, but preventatively with the families of children under five.”
