PROJECT

Roots of Empathy

PURPOSE

To develop empathy and emotional literacy and decrease aggression in primary school children

FUNDING

£115,000 this year from the Scottish Government's Children, Young People and Families' Early Intervention Fund, enabling delivery in 124 schools across 19 Scottish authorities

BACKGROUND

Roots of Empathy (RoE) is a classroom-based programme helping primary school children develop empathy through observing babies' interactions with their parents. It was developed in Canada in 1996 by social entrepreneur Mary Gordon.

Action for Children first piloted RoE with 7- to 11-year-olds in 10 North Lanarkshire primary schools in 2010. The charity got funding from Inspiring Scotland and the Scottish government to expand the scheme across Scotland, reaching 27 of its 32 authorities by 2014/15. By this summer, more than 20,000 children across Scotland will have taken part. The programme is also running in parts of England and Wales and across Northern Ireland.
