How activities get children set up for school

2 mins read Early years education Education
Parents learn how they can help prepare their child for school through a series of activities to develop skills and character strengths.

PROJECT
EasyPeasy

PURPOSE
To improve two- to six-year-olds' school readiness

FUNDING
Costs local authorities, schools, nurseries or children's centres between £9 and £45 per child per year, depending on setting size. EasyPeasy's development has been aided by the Sutton Trust and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation's Parental Engagement Fund

BACKGROUND
Research by Demos found a positive correlation between parenting with consistent rules and boundaries and children's development of resilience, concentration, empathy, self-control and social skills, widely acknowledged as prerequisites for school success.

The findings, published in the 2009 report Building Character, were the inspiration for the EasyPeasy app, developed by Demos public policy researcher Jen Lexmond. She was keen to explore "the idea that combining research with technology could lead to something impactful and scalable" so entered the Knee High Design Challenge, a Design Council-led competition for innovative ideas supporting under-five's health and wellbeing.
