Scottish children to learn about nurturing through babies

A unique Scottish government-backed scheme in which primary school children learn about nurturing behaviour from babies has got underway.

The Roots of Empathy initiative is being expanded across 16 council areas and involves primary school children receiving monthly classroom visits from babies and their parents.

Children taking part are encouraged to look at how the baby interacts with their parent and the class. This is intended to help pupils develop empathy, to reduce levels of bullying, aggression and violence, and to prepare children to be responsible parents in the future. 

A spokeswoman for Action for Children, which is managing the initiative in Scotland, said: "The children have really taken to this well and are learning a lot. It’s very sweet seeing them all together with the babies.
