Toddle to library boosts literacy

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Children and childminders in Sunderland have taken part in a sponsored walk to raise money for charity while improving children's communication, language and literacy skills.

The Big Toddle, organised by children's charity Barnardo's, saw 10 childminders and the children they care for set off from Sunderland Children's Centre in Washington to the Millenium Centre Library for a special storytelling event. The event raised more than £400.

Labour councillor Pat Smith, the lead member for children's services at Sunderland City Council, said: "Childminders are an excellent way to encourage a child's reading as they are able to fully support a child as they develop language and literacy skills at their own pace."
