Knowsley organised themed reading and activities for children in libraries and town centres.
What did it involve? Sand and water play including sandcastle building and story sessions. Library staff also gave away a pack containing a book of seaside rhymes, stickers, posters and postcards. Reading sessions focused on seaside books, such as Mr Seahorse by Eric Carle and Toddle Waddle by Julia Donaldson. Families were encouraged to stage their own beach-based reading events, with the Book Start website offering a range of activity sheets and craft making kits.
What did it achieve? Diane Cosgrove, the council's Book Start librarian, says the day was a timely way of promoting reading to children ahead of the summer holidays. Councillor Graham Wright, cabinet member for Knowsley Council's children and family services, adds that a high point of the day was seeing families enjoying reading together. He explains: "It's great to see residents being encouraged to make the most of their local library and develop a love for reading."
