Better literacy rate is crucial to UK's economic future

The National Literacy Trust has outlined the economic argument for better government investment in speech, language and communication services for children.

In its Manifesto for Literacy the trust calls on all political parties to prioritise literacy in their next general election manifestos.

It says that the UK literacy rate is slipping back, which will devastate the country's economic competitiveness in the future.

According to the University of Hong Kong's global study of literacy, called Progress in International Reading Literacy Study, the UK's literacy levels have slipped dramatically. While in 2001 the UK had the third best literacy rate among developed countries, by 2006 it had fallen to 15th. The next report is due out next year.
