UK's high spend fails to produce results in key areas

Despite spending more on children than other countries, the UK has high rates of underage drinking, teenage pregnancy and educational disadvantage, according to a report.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development found that the UK spends more on children than most of its 30 member countries, at just over £90,000 per head compared with an average of just under £80,000.

But the report said the UK has the fourth highest rate of young people not in education, employment or training, the highest rate of underage drinking, and the fourth highest teenage pregnancy rate after Mexico, Turkey and the US.

The report as a whole called for more spending on younger children in the countries studied, but the UK was singled out as already doing so.
