The video was produced just weeks before riots swept the country, cementing negative portrayals of young people in some media. The aim is for the video to go viral as it is shared by an expanding number of people on the internet.
A dozen young people worked together on the video's story. Challenging Representations plays with the audience's preconceptions and shows a group of young people in hooded tops with a pistol being fired. What does the viewer thinks this means? The message is a powerful one and challenges stereotypes.
The video was produced with the help of 21CC, part of the BBC, which delivers workshops using video and other digital media to schools, colleges and community groups. It was shot at Langdon School in the London Borough of Newham, and edited at BBC Television Centre with the young people involved at every step of the production process.
