NCB Now: Save our Buses at conference fringe

1 min read
Many thanks to Young NCB member Jhon, who spoke at a fringe event at last month's Liberal Democrat conference.

The meeting was organised by the Save our Buses campaign, co-ordinated by the Campaign for Better Transport, and aimed at highlighting the negative effect that cuts to funding for bus services are having, especially on young people and those living in rural areas.

Jhon used this opportunity to talk about his own experiences as both a young person, and as someone with a disability. He pointed out that bus services were a crucial part of young people's lives, enabling them to: "See our friends, to get to the library to do our homework and to generally get to where we need to be." He also indicated how cuts could have a particular impact on disabled people. For example, when a reduction in services made it necessary to use two or more buses to complete a journey, he would require a carer to help him to make the interchange.

Other speakers at the event included Norman Baker MP and NCB's Barbara Hearn OBE. The meeting was chaired by Stephen Joseph, chief executive of the Campaign for Better Transport.
