NCB Now: Project to ease care transition

1 min read
Young people leaving care often face significant barriers to becoming independent adults, with many gaining low levels of educational attainment and more likely to have been caught up in the criminal justice system.

A new five-year project From Care to Independence from Fairbridge, working in partnership with NCB and funded by the Big Lottery Fund's Youth in Focus programme, will help young people in care make the transition to living independently.

Research indicates that the quality of the relationship between a young person leaving care and their key worker is crucial in achieving a positive transition to independence. The From Care to Independence project will conduct in-depth research into the relationship between care workers and care leavers in a wide range of support services in both the voluntary and statutory sectors, paying particular attention to the views of young people using these services. The objective is to contribute to a growing body of knowledge on effective practice for care leavers and to develop and test a new training model that can be used by youth practitioners across the country to improve the rate of successful transitions.
